Present: Robyn Ryle, President; Kelly Joyce, Secretary; Joy Culp, Treasurer; Kathy Crafton, Board Member; Sally Wurtz, Board Member; Mary Kay Butler, Board Member; Judi Terpening, Director; Jess McAlister, Assistant Director.
Not Present: Terry Phillips, Kathy Rosenberg
President Ryle opened the regular meeting at 4:04 P.M. Butler made a motion to approve the agenda. Crafton seconded. Motion carried.
Wurtz made a motion to approve the minutes from the March 14, 2024 regular meeting. Joyce seconded. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report & Approval of Claims
March 15 through April 11, 2024
Operating Fund expenditures were $122,127.34. Expenditures from all funds were $314,682.70. Operating Fund receipts were $8,710.59. Receipts to all funds were $204,851.43. Balance in the Operating Fund as of April 11, 2024 was $1,073,895.78. Total bank balance was $1,687,071.32.
There were 2 checks over $6,000:
$11,072.43 to Jefferson County Treasurer for health insurance premiums.
$100,000.00 to Friendship State Bank for purchase of a new investment.
Joyce made a motion to approve the payment of claims in the amount of $314,682.70. Wurtz seconded. Motion carried.
Director Terpening’s report
March Adult Programming
24 events with 306 attendees.
Online Drawing & Painting Class had 11 attendees in 5 classes.
Comics & Graphic Storytelling Class had 40 attendees in 4 classes.
Let's Go Girls Charm Bracelets craft had 56 attendees in 2 classes.
Totality: The Great North American Eclipse of 2024 with Dr. Mark Littmann had 79 attendees.
La Leche League had 18 attendees.
Brush Pen Calligraphy I & II had 24 attendees.
Second Saturday Stitchers had 6 attendees.
Hanover Book Group read Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano and had 15 attendees.
Solar Eclipse crafts-Baily's Beads Keychains had 24 attendees in 2 classes.
Solar Eclipse crafts-Sun Print Totes had 28 attendees in 4 classes.
Hope Community had 5 attendees for Bird Feeders craft.
Meetings
22 Meetings with 145 attendees.
Outreach
27 deliveries and circulated 149 items.
Children’s & Young Adult
7 programs with 176 attendees.
Fun with Light & Shadows had 11 attendees.
Lego Club had 21 attendees.
Kindergarten Tours for Canaan Community Academy had 51 attendees in 2 tours.
Disco Ball Charms, a YA craft, had 20 attendees.
Story Line had 38 calls.
Solar Eclipse Crafts had 35 attendees at La Case Amiga.
Social Media/Circulation Statistics
Website had a slight decrease with 3,041 visits.
Local History website had 1,458 visits, up 7%.
Monthly newsletter went out to 4,406 recipients.
Facebook followers increased to 3,598, up 3.2%. Top posts by engagement were the new StoryWalk book followed by Sue Livers program about George DeBaptiste.
Instagram followers were up to 755.
Circulations in March were 16,332, much higher than March 2023 and March 2019. Most of it was due to Overdrive and Hoopla.
Visits to the Library in March was 298 compared to 277 in 2023.
Staff and Volunteers
McAlister designed the new StoryWalk book, "Eclipse." Hughes and Terpening helped set it up at the park with the Friends of Clifty.
Terpening and Culp attended the TrustIndiana workshop at Clifty Inn.
6 staff members attended the Public Library Association Conference in Columbus, Ohio.
Celebrated National Library Week with "Spirit Week." Themes were Pajama Day, Wacky Tacky Sock Day, Dress Up Like Your Favorite Book Character Day and Decades Day. Analog Coffee made a signature drink called the "Li-Berry" and gave library employees 10% off.
Inman wrote and received a $5,000.00 grant for Lifelong Arts Indiana: Creative Aging Program funded by Indiana Arts Commission. She and Hughes are working together to come up with an art program for age 65 and over.
Part-time Local History Assistant Alicia Zavala, will be moving out of state and leaving in April. Library Assistant Joel Knoll has been training to take her place. He has been working at the Library since 2020.
Terpening attended the ILF Board Meeting and did four library tours.
Now that the Solar Eclipse is over, the Library is collecting solar eclipse glasses to send to South America where the next eclipses will be.

Friends of the Library
FOL met with Bill Barnes at the Community Foundation and signed a contingency form regarding their endowment. It names the Library as recipient of the endowment if FOL ever becomes defunct.
Will be sponsoring Kona Ice for Summer Reading Kickoff on June 3.
Purchased new Konica copier for the Library.
Hosting a Children's Book Sale April 25 from 4p-7p, April 26 from 10a-7p, April 27 form 10a-4p. May Book Sale will be May 17 from 10a-5p, May 18 from 10a-4p, May 19 from 12p-5p.
Buildings
Park bench update-MCHS welding shop is being remodeled, so it will be fall before they can start on it.
Insurance on the buildings renews May 1. The current company is Selective but the agent is considering switching to Indiana Farmers at a substantial savings. He will be here to meet with Terpening on April 30 to discuss it. Board members are welcome to attend.
Correspondence
Received a book complaint from a non-resident. She was given a reconsideration form and did not fill it out, but left a note for the director.
Evergreen annual report; there are now 130 member libraries. JCPL is #14 in resource sharing.
Received a nice note from Canaan Community Academy expressing appreciation for McAlister's attendance at their Career Fair. They talked to students about what it takes to become a librarian.
Library received in $4,725.00 in grants from the Community Foundation.
Continuing Business - None
New Business
Joyce made a motion to approve the updated Borrower Policy. Butler seconded. Motion carried.
Wurtz made a motion to approve the Disaster Recovery for Computer Systems with no changes. Crafton seconded. Motion carried.
Terpening presented an addition to the Personnel Policy, adding ALA Code of Ethics information. The policy will be discussed further before a vote is taken.
Terms for board members Rosenberg and Joyce will expire June 30. Both agreed to serve another term. Motion carried.
Motion to adjourn by Butler at 4:46 P.M. Crafton seconded. Meeting adjourned.
